What is a collector car?
Collector car is a very broad term that simply means someone had put value on that vehicle for some reason. People collect cars for certain reasons. Some love a certain make or model and only collect those cars. Some may like a certain type, like muscle cars, fat fenders, or exotics.
That’s the beauty of collecting, there are no rules.
Of course, there are those who use their car collection as an investment. Each vehicle is carefully selected for its potential to appreciate in value.
Classics and antiques are probably the most commonly collected cars. The criteria for this category vary somewhat from organization to organization. Typically, a car that is 25 years old is considered a classic. Those from the late 1800s and early 1900s are often referred to as antiques. When people think of collector cars, the classics are what usually comes to mind.
Rare cars also find their way into collections. Those that had a low or limited production run tend to be highly sought after in collector circles. Specialty cars like experimental prototype cars are also popular.
The Lamborghini Diablo that ran from 1990 to 1998 is a hot commodity because it is considered to be the last of the authentic Lambos. On the other hand, a 1957 Ferrari 410 Superamerica SIII can certainly perk up your portfolio too.
Woodside’s definition of a “collector car” tends to be fairly broad. Cars that aren’t quite classics yet, but aren’t your standard exotics either typically fall into the collector classification. Also, cars that have a following, such as the Porsche and Corvette are often considered to be collector cars as well. Private party seller or dealership: You get to choose!
When you are shopping around for car to add to your collection, you might find it on a showroom floor – then again, it might be in some guy’s warehouse, nestled in with all the cars in his collection.
This places you in a very different buying situation. You are dealing with a private seller.
Most lenders, even those that do collector car lending, won’t write a car loan for a transaction with a private seller. They prefer to work exclusive with dealerships and refuse to consider other buying scenarios.
At Woodside Credit we pride ourselves at thinking outside of the box. We understand that not every great collector car will be found at a dealership. We realize that sometimes in order to get the car you want you have to go to a private seller to close the deal.
And that’s perfectly fine with us.
We write car loans for dealerships AND private sellers. We don’t want to stand in the way of you getting a great car – so we rewrote the rules.
